Bike Week Seminar – 2 February 2007

Cycling Scotland is holding a Bike Week Seminar on 2 February 2007, for anyone thinking about organising an event during Bike Week. The seminar is free, and open to anyone.

The seminar will give detailed information on all aspects of organising a Bike Week event, from deciding what sort of event to put on, planning and preparing, promotion and PR, through to managing the event on the day. There will also be presentations from people who organised events in 2006, giving the benefits of their experience and pointing out both good practise and the pitfalls.

Last year’s seminar was a big success, with over 70 delegates attending the one day conference in the Scottish Executive’s Victoria Quay offices. The 2007 seminar will also take place there on 2 February, with 100 places available on a first come, first served basis. To book a place simply e-mail andrewpankhurst@cyclingscotland.org.

Try Cycle Speedway

Come And Try It

As part of National Bike Week Edinburgh Falcons are holding a Come and Try Cycle Speedway afternoon at Redbraes Park on Sunday 25th June from 1pm. Anyone young or old, male or female is welcome to come along. There will be plenty of bikes for people to use, however riders should bring their own helmet and gloves. GREAT NEWS for Sustrans and Cycling

The Scottish Executive is giving cycle route charity Sustrans EIGHT million pounds to spent in Scotland in the next 2 years.

Edinburgh plans include “reopening the Rodney Street tunnel at Canonmills in Edinburgh to link the New Town with the north Edinburgh cycle network, avoiding a busy road junction and a new route between Cramond and South Queensferry through the Dalmeny estate which will enable cyclists to avoid the A90.”

Bicycle Film Festival Tickets Winners

Congratulations to Stuart Rivans and Fraser Millar. Their names came out of the hat.

Films suggested by them were –

1 Overcoming – 2005 – Story of CSC team. The best fly-on-the-wall doc about a road racing team in twenty years.
2 The Final Hour – About Chris Boardman (Bromley Video Productions?)
3 The Tour Baby! – 2003 – Scott Coady gives us a badly needed humorous look behind the scenes of the Tour de France. Really entertaining with never a dull moment.
4 The Bicycle Thief (1948) A world classic about an Italian workman who finds a job, only to have the bike he needs for work stolen; he and his son search Rome for it.
5 The Greatest Show on Earth (1974, 75 min.) A brilliant documentary showing the majestic beauty that is the Giro d’Italia.

The Bicycle Film Festival in Edinburgh (23-25 June 2006 at the Filmhouse), is looking for film ideas for 2007.

What is your favourite cycling film? It might be a short film, a documentary, an animation, or just co-starring a bicycle. Maybe it’s still to be made! There’s an abundance of cycling films out there – an impressive list can be found at http://uk.geocities.com/mikstar123/films.html.

Cycle trips increase 50% in 5 years

“A TfL spokesman said: “Cycling is a quick, healthy and convenient way of getting around London. But it is also the case that the Tube network is reaching capacity and we can only put so many buses on roads that are already extremely busy so the future lies in cycling.” Full story in Independent

That’s London but central Edinburgh is also seeing a massive increase in cyclists – it’s not just the sunny weather!

Mid Summer Evening Ride

TryCycling In Edinburgh is planning its first ever mid-week AND evening ride.

We are inviting YOU (and your friends) to ride to Ratho on Midsummer’s Eve.

Meet at Canal Basin/Edinburgh Quay/Cargo (Fountainbridge opp Gardners Cres – end of Union Canal) around 5.30 Wednesday 21st June (why not start the day at the FREE Bicycle Breakfast, City Chambers 8-10)

Leave in groups of 10 to 15 from 6.00

Ride to Bridge Inn (Beer Garden) - only seven miles (It’s flat!!!)

Come back at your leisure.
